Write a creator brief that leaves room to create

A useful brief tells a creator what the audience needs to understand and what the brand can prove.

A useful brief tells a creator what the audience needs to understand and what the brand can prove.

Describe the moment of use

Start with one person, one setting and one question. For a homeware brand, the useful story might be how a small tray keeps everyday objects together. That is a clearer starting point than asking for a video that simply makes the brand look premium. Give the creator the product and enough time to try it.

Separate facts from creative choices

Supply accurate specifications, approved claims, required disclosure, delivery dates and usage rights. Then identify the decisions the creator owns: the opening line, setting, sequence or demonstration. A brief that scripts every word risks losing the voice that made the partnership relevant.

Agree how to read the result

Decide beforehand what action the content should encourage. A product visit, a saved tutorial and a completed order answer different questions. Review the comments for repeated objections and useful customer language. Even when attribution is incomplete, those observations can improve a product page or the next brief.

Make the review process clear

Before production, decide who checks product facts and who approves the finished content. Give the creator a clear point for raising questions about a claim or a demonstration. If several people need to comment, collect their feedback before sending it back, so the creator has one usable set of notes.

For example, a brand may need the size and material of an organizer stated accurately while the creator chooses the setting and how to demonstrate it. Writing down that division makes it easier to give useful feedback without rewriting the entire piece in the brand's voice.

Decide how the finished content will be used

Discuss where the content will appear and whether the brand wants to reuse it on its own channels or in paid advertising. Those plans affect the brief and the discussion with the creator. Keep the agreed uses with the campaign notes so the team knows what material is available for later work.
